Overview:
The Rhineland-Palatinate Moselle Cycle Tour, part of the cross-border Vélo Tour Moselle, begins at medieval Thorn Castle. From here, it guides you along well-maintained paths beside the Upper Moselle to the first major stopping point, Trier.
Trier, the oldest town in Germany, has a history that dates back 2,000 years. Highlights include some impressive structures from Roman times.
At Schweich, just a few miles downriver, the Moselle coils up into spectacular bows as its passes through the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The mineral-rich soil on the steep terraced slopes is key to the world-class wines that are produced here.
A host of attractions are waiting to be discovered in the pretty little towns and wine villages that you cycle through. The famous Roman wine ship in Neumagen-Dhron, for example, or the Roman wine presses of the Middle Moselle. Other highlights include Bernkastel-Kues, a medieval town where the hugely popular Bernkasteler Doctor wine is made, Traben-Trarbach with its art nouveau architecture and Kröv renowned for its distinctive half-timbered houses. The vineyards that produce the acclaimed Zeller Schwarze Katz wines then usher in a procession of Moselle castles: Marienburg and Burg Arras in the Zeller Land region, Burg Metternich and Cochem Castle in the Cochem holiday region, Burg Eltz perched on one of the Maifeld hills, Burg Pyrmont near Treis-Karden, Ehrenburg Castle and Burg Thurant on the Lower Moselle near Kobern-Gondorf. All are worth a visit, but you might have to leave your bike and lace up those walking boots for some of them. We also recommend that you visit Europe's steepest vineyard slope in Bremm.
The Moselle Cycle Route ends at Deutsches Eck (German corner) in Koblenz where the Moselle and Rhine converge.
Alternative routes and shortcuts:
There are several sections where cycle paths run parallel to the main route on the other side of the river. See the elevation profile for more information.Links to the wider cycle network:
Here is a list of long-distance and standard cycle routes that connect to the Moselle Cycle Route and the towns where you can join them: Saar Cycle Route (long-distance, Konz), Kyll Valley Cycle Route (long-distance, Ehrang), Rhine Cycle Route (long-distance, Koblenz), Maars-Moselle Cycle Route (Lieser/Bernkastel-Kues), Volcanic Eifel Cycle Route (Alf), Hunsrück-Moselle Cycle Route (Treis-Karden), Maifeld Cycle Trail (via the Schrumpftal valley from Hatzenport)Some cycle routes, such as the Sauer Cycle Route and the Nahe-Hunsrück-Moselle Cycle Route, are only signposted in line with current guidelines in certain sections. Small waymarks are used elsewhere.
Detailed information on the network of cycle routes is available from the Rhineland-Palatinate cycling website.
Signposting:
The route is signposted from end to end using the Moselle logo in white on a green background. These are gradually being replaced by signs that match those in our leaflets (green on a white background), so you may still encounter both forms.
Terrain:
The route follows the Moselle through predominantly level countryside. It is suitable for children, cycle trailers and tandem bikes, though restrictions apply in some sections. Asphalt is the main surface, with some paved or gravel paths. The route at a glance:
| Kilometres | Stage | Length (km) | Uphill (metres) Downhill (metres) | Summary of the terrain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 - 38 | Schloss Thorn
- Trier | 38 | Re: 170 170 Li: 10 30 | The well-maintained cycle route leads you through the broad Upper Moselle valley where elbling wines are made. The stage ends in historic Trier. |
| 38 - 140 | Trier - Reil | 102 | Re: 80 220 Li: 320 370 | Trier is where the Middle Moselle valley begins, which narrows as you follow the twists and turns of the river to Reil. The cycle paths are set back from the road for most of the way. |
| 140 - 200 | Reil - Treis-Karden | 60 | 70 80 | The route runs parallel to the river past spectacular vineyards. Sometimes you cycle away from the road, sometimes on a roadside cycle path, and occasionally on roads where there is no cycle path. |
| 200 - 238 | Treis-Karden
- Koblenz | 38 | 70 90 | As the Moselle enters its lower reaches, it begins to resemble the Rhine valley with its famous castles. Space is so limited here that the cycle path has often been diverted between a train line and the vineyards. The route ends at Deutsches Eck (German corner) in Koblenz, where the Moselle flows into the Rhine. |
